When Can My Child Use Adult Golf Clubs?
Height is the first gate, swing speed is the second, and moving up early costs more than it saves. Here is how to judge when a junior is ready for adult clubs.
Every junior golfer eventually outgrows junior clubs, and every parent eventually asks the same question: can we just move them into adult clubs now and stop replacing sets? It is a fair question. Junior sets are outgrown every couple of years, adult clubs are the last set you will ever buy, and a fourteen-year-old who is already taller than one parent looks ready enough.
The honest answer is that readiness is not about age, and it is only partly about height. Two gates have to be passed, and skipping the second one is where the money and the technique both go astray.
Gate one: height
Height comes first because it is what determines club length, and length determines almost everything else about how a club can be swung. A club that is too long forces a player to stand further from the ball, lift their hands, or choke down so far that the club's balance changes entirely.
Fitters commonly treat somewhere around 165cm as the point where standard-length adult clubs start to become plausible for a young player. Treat that as a convention rather than a rule. It is a starting point that assumes average arm length and an average setup posture, and children vary in both. A junior with long arms relative to their height may need shorter clubs than the number suggests; a junior with short arms may need standard length sooner.
The measurement that actually matters in a fitting is not height alone but wrist-to-floor distance, taken standing upright with arms hanging naturally. That is the number a fitter will reach for, and it is why two children of identical height can be fitted differently.

Gate two: swing speed
Height gets a child to the right length. Swing speed decides whether they can actually make an adult shaft work.
A golf shaft is designed to bend and recover during the swing. The player has to load it - to bend it - for it to deliver the head squarely and at full speed. Adult shafts are built to be loaded by adult swing speeds, and a shaft that never gets loaded simply does not do its job.
Fitters commonly look for something in the region of 90mph of driver clubhead speed before recommending a standard adult stiff shaft, with regular-flex adult shafts sitting below that. Again, these are working conventions, not a published standard: flex labels are not standardised between manufacturers, so one brand's regular can behave like another's stiff. What actually goes wrong when a junior moves up early
This is worth spelling out, because the failure is not dramatic. The child does not fall over or miss the ball. They just get slowly worse, and nobody connects it to the equipment.
- Low, weak ball flight: an unloaded stiff shaft delivers the head with less speed and often with the face open, so the ball comes out low and drifts right for a right-hander
- Distance loss: the shot that used to carry a bunker now runs into it, which is demoralising for a child who has just been given nicer-looking clubs
- A hit-harder pattern: this is the expensive one. Feeling the loss of distance, the junior swings harder, faster and earlier from the top - the exact opposite of the smooth sequencing every coach is trying to build
- Fatigue and bad habits late in a round: a heavier club swung at maximum effort for eighteen holes produces a tired, short, arms-only swing by the back nine
Undoing a hit-harder pattern takes far longer than saving up for the right set. That is the real cost of moving up a year early, and it does not appear on any price tag.
Why cutting down adult clubs is not the shortcut it looks like
The obvious workaround is to buy adult clubs and shorten them. It solves the length problem cheaply and leaves three problems untouched.
- Weight: adult heads are built to be swung by adults. Shortening the shaft does not lighten the head, and a head that is too heavy for a child's speed drags the swing out of sequence
- Flex: cutting from the butt end of a shaft makes it play stiffer, not softer, so a shaft that was already too stiff for a junior becomes stiffer still
- Lie angle: shortening a club without bending the head effectively makes it too upright for the player, which sends strikes and start direction in one consistent direction

None of this makes cut-down clubs impossible. A club fitter can shorten a shaft, re-shaft with a lighter and softer profile, bend the lie and adjust the grip size. Done properly it is real work with a real bill, and by the time it is paid for, a purpose-built junior or intermediate club is often the cheaper option.

The in-between option most people miss
The choice is not only junior set or adult set. Many manufacturers make a teen or intermediate size, and plenty of adult models can be ordered with a lighter shaft, a softer flex and a shorter build. A taller teenager with a modest swing speed is often best served by adult-length clubs fitted with a junior-appropriate shaft, which passes gate one without failing gate two.
A senior-flex adult shaft is sometimes suggested for the same reason, and it can work as an interim measure.
A practical sequence
- Measure height and wrist-to-floor every few months during a growth spurt, and write the numbers down
- When height nears the adult range, book a fitting rather than buying on the basis of a chart
- Ask the fitter for clubhead speed with a driver and a mid-iron, and ask which flex that speed suits
- If the answer is 'not yet', consider a single well-fitted adult-length club with a soft shaft as a bridge, rather than a full set
- Buy the full adult set once both gates are clearly passed, and expect it to last
