Carpooling and Travel Tips for Junior Golf Families

Carpooling and Travel Tips for Junior Golf Families

Practical ways to organise carpools and manage travel time for junior golf lessons, practice and competitions.

Golf often involves more travel than other junior sports — courses tend to be spread further apart than local ovals or courts, and competitions can mean a trip well outside the usual school run. Getting organised around travel early saves a lot of stress, and sharing the load with other families can make a real difference.

Find your carpool circle early

Most junior programs and clubs have a small group of regulars, and it's worth introducing yourself to a few other parents in the first few weeks rather than waiting until you're desperate for a lift-share. A simple group chat with two or three other families can turn into a reliable roster where everyone takes a turn driving.

Plan around traffic and course timing, not just distance

A course that's a manageable 25 minutes away on a Saturday morning can be a very different trip in peak-hour traffic on a weekday afternoon. When comparing club or coaching options, it's worth timing the actual drive during the hours you'd realistically be travelling, rather than relying on map estimates alone.

Pack the car properly, every time

A quick pre-departure checklist — clubs, shoes, hat, water, snacks, sunscreen — avoids the frustration of arriving at a course 40 minutes away only to realise something important was left at home. Keeping a spare hat, sunscreen and rain jacket in the boot permanently is a simple way to cover for the inevitable forgotten item.

Build in buffer time for competitions

Competition days often involve registration, warm-up on the range or practice green, and finding out which group and tee time your child has been allocated — all before play even starts. Arriving with plenty of buffer avoids a rushed, stressful start to what should be an enjoyable day.

How far is too far to travel regularly for junior golf?

It varies by family, but many find that anything beyond about 45 minutes to an hour each way becomes hard to sustain weekly, and works better as an occasional trip for a special clinic or competition rather than a regular commitment.
