From Junior to Adult Tees: When and How to Transition

From Junior to Adult Tees: When and How to Transition

Moving up from junior or forward tees is a milestone, not a race - here's how to judge when your child is genuinely ready.

Moving up to longer tees is a genuine milestone in a junior golfer's development, but it's easy to rush it based on age alone rather than actual readiness. The right marker is consistent ball-striking distance and course management, not a birthday.

Distance Is the Main Indicator

A junior is generally ready to move back a tee when they can reach greens in a similar number of shots to what's expected from that tee for an average player - if every approach is a career-best strike just to reach the green, they're not there yet, and forcing it usually just leads to frustration and slower rounds.

Our junior tee yardages guide explains how to match tee choice to hitting distance in more detail.

Course Management Matters as Much as Distance

Longer tees also mean longer, often more strategically demanding holes - more carries over hazards, more club selection decisions, more variety in approach shots. A junior who's mastered the shorter tees strategically, not just physically, will find the transition much smoother.

Move Gradually, Not All at Once

Rather than jumping straight to full adult tees, many clubs and coaches recommend an intermediate step - a combination or "combo" tee set that's slightly forward of standard men's or women's tees - as a stepping stone. Ask your coach or club whether this option exists on your home course.

Let Confidence Guide the Pace

If a junior moves back a tee and it visibly knocks their confidence - much higher scores, frustration, or reluctance to keep playing from there - it's completely reasonable to move them forward again for a while. This isn't a permanent decision, and going back and forth as skills develop is normal.

Should my child play from adult tees in competitions before they're ready?

Most junior competitions use age-appropriate tee markers specifically so players aren't forced onto tees beyond their current ability - check the event's conditions of play rather than assuming full adult tees are required.
